Writer Jason Hamilton has shared a list of seventeen character-development exercises on the Kindlepreneur’s blog.

They’re meant to help you breathe life into your characters, not necessarily to be included in your final product.

And one exercise — to put them in horrible situations — reminded us of another post on character development.

That one, from Kathleen McCleary for Writer Unboxed, focused on one single aspect of characters: how they react to something unexpected or out of their control.

McCleary offers examples of a few such scenarios, taken from real life and imagined, to illustrate how the unexpected can help characters reveal themselves more deeply.
