Distribution, when it comes to books, describes two different scenarios, and Jane Friedman would like to clear this up for indie authors.

In the traditional publishing world, yes, there are distributors who work to actually sell authors’ physical books to retailers, who will then sell them to readers.

But unless an indie author is told otherwise — or hires outside help — the distributors that they use are simply going to handle the physical production of the books.

In this scenario, the author is responsible for selling the books, either directly or through a third party.

Head to Friedman’s blog for more on the basics of book distribution for indie authors.
