Trained fighter and author Carla Hoch has answered a number of writerly questions about physical conflict in literature.

But her very best tip, she says, is actually to not write an accurate fight scene.

That may seem odd, coming from someone who has previously explained how to depict multiple attackers or animal sidekicks in a plausible way.

But, Hoch explains, a rigid adherence to exactly what happens when humans hurt each other will also hurt your story.

She uses the example of a navigation app, which provides only the relevant details and not every single detail you might note on your route from point A to B.

Hoch’s full explanation of how to effectively use accuracy in fight scenes is up at Writer’s Digest.
