Writing a story in the order a reader will consume it makes logical sense … on paper.

But many writers and editors — including Dave King — have found that it may not be the most effective route.

Characters and plot developments can change in ways that authors didn’t anticipate when they began the project, and middle sections of the novels can present a stumbling block even if the content is developing exactly as expected.

And that’s why King makes the case for writing in both directions — that is, not tying yourself so firmly to a perfectly linear approach – in a post for Writer Unboxed.
