Some people have no problem plunging forward with a project even if they're not sure they have all the pieces.

Others hold back, citing the need to wait for all the details to be confirmed.

Author Ashleigh Renard has spoken with several other writers who fall into the latter camp, when it comes to email newsletters.

Their thinking goes along the lines of, why gain subscribers if you don't have the perfect newsletter strategy already dreamed up?

Renard wants to challenge that mindset, because it could leave them in the same sticky situation she once found herself in.

A social media outage left her with no way to promote interviews she'd done about the book she was trying to sell, since she hadn't worried about building her email list.

Her advice? Sure, don't build a list that you completely ignore, but remember that if you can get readers signed up, that means they perceive you as having the answer to some problem they have.

All you have to do is provide that solution.
