If you're a rule-follower, you might initially be a little disappointed to hear that Dave Chesson won't tell you how long your book's chapters "should" be.

That's because, of course, there aren't any rules, only averages — which include outliers.

What Chesson can present, besides those average word counts, is what characteristics any chapter (regardless of length) should have and how to use varying lengths to benefit your book.
