Authors are well aware of the need for tension and microtension throughout their stories.

But editor Tiffany Yates Martin wants to be clear — that doesn't mean you have to constantly plunk your characters into big, dramatic conflict.

Instead, what you need to ensure is that throughout your story, characters and readers encounter something contrary to their desires and expectations.
