The lengths authors go to in order to get it right 

Plenty of authors hit the library or another institution of learning to research their novels.

Others take a more literally active approach to adding authenticity to their novels.

Barbara Linn Probst, for example, has traveled to Alaska and tried glassblowing (in separate instances, we believe) for the sake of her craft.

That inspired her to ask her fellow authors what outside-the-norm activities they'd done in order to confirm or provide details in their stories.
