The hope is that an author bringing their work to a critique group is truly open to gaining helpful insight into how to improve their work.

So if you're a member of such a group, how can you be sure you're providing just that?

Anne R. Allen suggests beginning with empathy for the writer whose work you're looking at.

And then from there, consider the do's and don'ts of critiquing that she created based on the “Milford” method of workshopping writing.

As a bonus, Allen also provides a few tips for writers who are being critiqued.
