Editor Tiffany Yates Martin acknowledges that the scales are somewhat skewed in one direction, when it comes to measuring out the right amount of backstory in fiction.

More likely than not, a writer will provide too much of it — or the wrong kind of it — or the wrong method of it.

But since some backstory is necessary, to underscore why a character behaves the way they do, just sipping it isn't the solution, either.
