A post from literary agent Donald Maass discussing suspense in fiction is, itself, an excellent example of suspenseful writing.

The headline is "Jack, in the Box," and he begins by talking about playing with a jack-in-the-box toy during his childhood.

Where is he going with this? I wondered ... and kept reading, to find out.

His point, if you don't mind my spoiling it, is that readers don't mind already knowing what will likely happen, as long as they aren't sure when and how it will happen.

Head to Writer Unboxed for more of Maass's thoughts on plot anticipation and emotional anticipation in fiction.
