Here's a post from David Corbett worth reading simply for amusement, in addition to edification.

His piece is about authentic and yet distinctive dialogue in fiction, and unsurprisingly, it recommends thinking about how people you know speak.

But to illustrate his point, Corbett shares a number of in-jokes and cultural references that people he knows use regularly.

So even if you have full confidence in your dialogue writing — or don't write dialogue at all — head to Writer Unboxed to read Corbett's examples of creative and real language.
