Sorry, but a lot of the news regarding the publishing industry nowadays is about artificial intelligence and how we're wielding it.

We'll start with the commentary that isn't about it, so that you can close out this tab once you reach the not-for-me stuff ...

  • If not big names, then what?: Kristine Kathryn Rusch follows up her business musings post about the creative world's shift away from superstars with actionable steps for authors (Kris Writes).

  • Is there a market for a virtual reality ereader?: A company called Sol is shipping out beta versions of its virtual reality ereader; ALLi news editor Dan Holloway breaks down this news and, yes, other AI-related developments (Alliance of Independent Authors).

  • EU lawmakers pass landmark AI regulation: European lawmakers have moved one step closer to requiring generative AI tools to pass a review before being released and to also ban biometric surveillance from public settings (CNBC).

  • Defamation lawsuit puts AI's legal liability to the test: A Georgia radio host is suing OpenAI LLC, saying that the latter's ChatGPT "produced a fabricated legal complaint" against him (JD Journal via The Passive Voice).
