The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Designing thriller and mystery twists that work: Author and book coach Samantha Skal explains that the key to a successful surprise is knowing what the villain's truth is and working backwards from there (Jane Friedman).

  • Tension and the power of unanswered questions: Angela Ackerman offers a refresher on the different between conflict and tension, then provides an illustrative example of the latter and why it works (Writers Helping Writers).

  • Detroit and the appeal of the underdog: Vaughn Roycroft's reflection is a twofer; it unpacks the facets to a well-developed fictional underdog, then also identifies ways in which Roycroft himself in his career is an underdog, something with which you might identify (Writer Unboxed).

  • On writing an autobiographical novel: Author Aube Rey Lescure shares her experience with sharing how she depicted a mother-daughter relationship in an autobiographical novel with her own mother (Women Writers, Women's Books).

  • Six reasons you're confusing the reader: Nathan Bransford compares his checklist for authors as being like the IT advice to turn a machine off and then on again.
