The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • The synopsis is your compass: Author Mindy Friddle suggests writing this summary of your novel at an early stage of the publishing process — during the revision stage — as an editing tool (Writer's Digest).

  • How to craft compelling backstory: Author and editor Michelle Barker reminds you to reveal piecs of your characters' pasts sparingly, more on a need-to-know basis than an information dump (Writers Helping Writers).

  • Seeing the light: Dave King explains how the reader too can have a revelation along with the characters, and why this is so powerful (Writer Unboxed).

  • Defining negative space in story: Author Deborah Ann Lucas offers ways to leave blank places, both literally and metaphorically, in fiction (Jane Friedman).
