The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • The first half of the second act: K.M. Weiland provides helpful advice for the so-often-challenging middle part of your story, in the sixth installment of her story structure series (Helping Writers Become Authors).

  • Writing an aging protagonist in a series: Author Matthew Donald shares his perspective on creating characters who grow with their readers over several books (Writer's Digest).

  • Give me layers: Vaughn Roycroft examines a novel he's reading and the ways in which the author has created a complex and compelling world that he can't tear himself away from (Writer Unboxed).

  • Balancing a compelling story with life lessons: Author Gayle Forman discusses her process for making sure her middle-grade fiction doesn't hammer its readers over the head with themes and takeaways (Writer's Digest).

It would be helpful to be able to read articles about writing for children by authors who don't feel it necessary to include their politics. Ironic that she says don't set out to "hammer readers over the head" then proceeds to do so herself.
