The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • The mirror and the arrow: Donald Maass believes that clear, compelling storytelling must either reflect our condition — mirrors — or show us our possibilities — the arrow — and he explains how to focus your story on one of these two routes (Writer Unboxed).

  • Reacquainting ourselves with our characters: Sarah Callender doesn't like accepting that we can never truly, fully know another person, but that truth can inform both your writing and your editing (Writer Unboxed).

  • Give yourself permission to pivot: Jennifer Todling reminds us all that we are completely allowed to change our minds — and, in fact, doing so (and changing our plans) can provide the space, flexibility, and inspiration we need for our creative pursuits (Women Writers, Women's Books).
