The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Advancing your plot: C.S. Lakin reminds authors that each scene in a story must have a point or purpose to it, so that the plot can actually move forward, and shares the five essential components of scene structure (Live Write Thrive).

  • Don't write every day, but still finish your novel: Editor and book coach Allison K. Williams advises authors to ditch the rule that one must write daily and recommends three other rules to follow instead to get them to the finish line (Jane Friedman).

  • Knowing about a cover-up: Learn how your character's secret knowledge of a cover-up can instill fear in them, hold them back, and otherwise alter their behavior (Writers Helping Writers).

  • The rules of fiction: K.M. Weiland unpacks what the rules of fiction really are, debunks some myths about them, and explains what purpose these rules actually serve (Helping Writers Become Authors).
