The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Use this method to identify your story's stakes: Becca Puglisi defines outer motivation and inner motivation, in explaining that those two combine to create empathy-building stakes (Writers Helping Writers).

  • In the beginning: Speaking of stakes, they're high for an author in the first page of a novel; Kathleen McCleary talks through the effort she's put in on her first 750 words (Writer Unboxed).

  • How fiction writers can "speed up" time: C.S. Lakin shares passages from various novels to illustrate ways that a writer can make time feel like it's slipping out of a character's grasp (Live Write Thrive).
