The publishing experts we follow have plenty of advice to offer, spanning a variety of topics.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • The new rejection that's spreading in insidious ways: "Silence means no" used to simply apply to cold manuscript submissions; now, says editor and ghostwriter Jacqueline Salmon, it's being used even when agents or publishers actively sought the submission — and is causing more problems than just hurt feelings (Jane Friedman).

  • Shadow work for writers: Kristin Hacken South provides the basics of Carl Jung's concept of the shadow self and notes how it interplays with various storytelling theories, in the first of two posts on this topic (Writer Unboxed).

  • What to do when your romance draft is a mess: Book coach Stuart Wakefield shares tips for revising a romance novel that doesn't quite tell the story you wanted it to (Writers Helping Writers).
