The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and creative process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • On revealing true character: Desmond Hall shares how putting your characters under increasing pressure will effectively make them reveal their true selves — and do it by showing, not telling — and uses Leo Tolstoy and Toni Morrison's work as illustrative examples (Writer Unboxed).

  • What makes a story “bad”?: K.M. Weiland identifies five common big-picture flaws in a narrative, along with examples of shows or movies that commit these mistakes and avoid them (Helping Writers Become Authors).

  • On writing Feed Us with Trees: Author Elspeth Hay takes us on the long journey of her nonfiction book, through drafts that didn't work to the one that finally did, with one delicious piece of advice from an editor sprinkled in (Women Writers, Women's Books).
