The publishing experts we follow have plenty of advice to offer, spanning a variety of topics.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Bridge characters: Elizabeth Sims prompts her fellow writers to consider how a character — of varying importance — spanning two different worlds can affect a novel's action and the other characters, and she provides multiple tropes and specific examples of these bridges (Writer's Digest).

  • Finding your memoir's essential question: Writer and editor Lisa Cooper Ellison explains how to determine which issue or theme of your memoir will provide the "mirror" for a reader to feel seen, even though they haven't lived your specific version of that experience (Jane Friedman).

  • Why writers and characters resist change: Angela Ackerman's psychology lesson about fear-based behavior is both a quick therapy session and a character-development prompt for authors (Writers Helping Writers).

  • UK indie publishers issue AI copyright warning: Dan Holloway reports on what the  Independent Publishers Guild's cease-and-desist letter to tech firms does and doesn't accomplish (Alliance of Independent Authors).

  • Are "review-driven" books still feasible?: Kathleen Schmidt analyzes what the elimination of yet another book-review section in a major publication really means for authors and their publicists (Publishing Confidential).
