The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Forgiveness as narrative risk in memoir: Author Paul Drugan explains why he couldn't follow a chronological timeline if he wanted to tell a compelling story and describes how he worked around that (Writer's Digest).

  • Writing about places when you don't live there: Author Sheila Yasmin Marikar dedicated herself to getting to know the people she met while vacationing in the Maldives, so that she could capture the essence of the place once she went home (Writer's Digest).

  • Six ways to discover your character's greatest fear: Becca Puglisi shares a framework to dig deeper into your character's soul and find out what is driving their behavior, in this guest post for K.M. Weiland (Helping Writers Become Authors).

  • You've got main character energy: Author Natalie Hart unpacks what another writer has called Resistance — a protective but counterproductive force that takes different forms in writers, but that ultimately leads to them not creating — and what to do about its manifestation in you (Writer Unboxed).

  • The layer cake approach to historical fiction: Author Julie Christine Johnson developed a few techniques to overcome the imposter syndrome she felt when beginning a historical fantasy novel (Writer Unboxed).
