The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Agatha Christie and the Bechdel test: Guest poster Melodie Campbell makes the case for ensuring that both genders appear in your fiction (Anne R. Allen's Blog... with Ruth Harris).

  • The past as unexplored territory: Dave King believes that writers of all genres, not just historical fiction, could benefit from putting themselves in the head of someone from the past (Writer Unboxed).

  • Giving your characters challenges may also give them strengths: Author Jonelle Patrick  knows that certain unchangeable challenges can be tricky to write sensitively if you don't share those challenges, but she explains that doing so can actually provide your character with remarkable strengths in the story (Jane Friedman).

  • How to write when it feels hard: Jillian Boehme shares some tips for writers to separate their external mental state from their ability to create, in order for the practice to feel sustainable (Writers Helping Writer).
