Over the next few weeks, we'll begin rolling out new performance updates for free ebook promotions.
You'll receive a brief update 7 days after your promotion begins, followed by a more complete summary after 30 days. Our goal is simple: give you a clearer picture of how your promotion is performing over time.
The first reports will be sent automatically for new promotions as the system rolls out. Historical reports for past promotions are not currently available.
Many authors are accustomed to thinking of ebook promotions as a one-day event. While the guaranteed promotion date remains important, recent improvements to our newsletter system allow books to continue reaching readers after that initial placement.
We won't give away all the details of how the system works, but the result is that many books continue generating reader interest well beyond Day 1.
The new reports will show:
-
Total appearances
-
Total clicks
-
Clicks generated after the initial promotion date
-
A list of dates your book appeared in the newsletter
Here are a few examples of the types of results we're seeing from recent promotions.
Example #1: Free KDP Select Promotion
Promotion Summary
-
Total appearances: 3
-
Total clicks: 2,143
-
Additional clicks after initial promotion date: 1,141
Even though this title received only three placements, more than half of its clicks occurred after the guaranteed promotion date. Because the author promoted with us on the first day of the free window, the book remained eligible for additional placements while it was still free.
Example #2: Permafree Title
Promotion Summary
-
Total appearances: 15
-
Total clicks: 2,995
-
Additional clicks after initial promotion date: 1,993
This book continued finding readers throughout the month, with roughly two-thirds of its clicks occurring after the initial promotion date.
Example #3: BookFunnel Reader Magnet (Cyberpunk)
Performance Summary
-
Total appearances: 30
-
Total signups: 382
-
Additional signups after initial promotion date: 182
This was a niche cyberpunk title using a BookFunnel signup link rather than retailer links. Signups are naturally lower than click totals because readers must complete an additional step, but the promotion continued generating new subscribers throughout the month. The author agreed to share his signup numbers with us.
Getting the Most From Your Promotion
A few simple practices can help maximize your results:
-
If you're using a limited-time free promotion, schedule your Fussy Librarian promotion for the first day your book goes free.
-
Make sure your free period begins before our newsletters are generated. For KDP Select promotions, we generally recommend setting the free period to begin at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time (midnight Pacific Time).
-
If you're promoting a reader magnet or permafree title, consider leaving it available for at least 30 days to take full advantage of ongoing placements.
The goal of these reports isn't just to show what happened on launch day. We want authors to have a better understanding of the full promotional lifecycle and the cumulative value of every placement.
We're excited to start sharing more of this data with you soon.
Happy promoting!
P.S. Free promotions are receiving these reports first, but we're also developing a 30-day summary for bargain promotions that will show the newsletters and dates where your book appeared.
