Earlier this year, we completely redesigned the way The Fussy Librarian promotes ebooks.
Instead of treating a promotion as a one-day event, our new system continues matching eligible books with readers whenever opportunities become available. As more promotions completed their 30-day reporting period, we started asking a simple question:
What is the data actually telling us?
Here are seven things that surprised us.
1. Most Reader Interest Happens After Day One
This was probably our biggest surprise.
Looking at titles that received three or more placements, we found that the median book received more than half of its clicks after the guaranteed promotion date. In other words, the guaranteed promotion starts the process. But it usually doesn't finish it.
This validates one of the biggest goals of our new personalized newsletter system: allowing books to continue finding new readers over time instead of relying on one large email blast.
2. Additional Placements Really Matter
The books receiving multiple placements consistently continued attracting readers for days and even weeks after their guaranteed promotion.
Those additional appearances weren't simply duplicates. They represented opportunities to reach readers who hadn't previously seen the book.
3. Reader Discovery Doesn't End After 24 Hours
One assumption we had before launching the new system was that nearly everyone opened our newsletters the day they were sent.
The data suggests otherwise.
Many readers continue opening newsletters over the following days. And it's not a small number, either. That means promotions can continue generating clicks long after the guaranteed promotion date has passed.
So even if your book is no longer free, readers are still clicking through to retailer pages. While we can't measure resulting sales, it seems likely that at least some of those readers are purchasing the book at its regular price.
4. Wide Distribution Creates More Opportunities
Books available through multiple retailers naturally create more opportunities for exposure.
Instead of appearing only in Kindle newsletters, wide books may also qualify for:
-
Apple Books
-
Kobo
-
Nook
-
Google Play
Each retailer creates another opportunity to introduce the book to readers.
5. Cross-Genre Bargain Books Can Reach Multiple Audiences
Bargain ebooks that genuinely belong in two genres have another advantage. Instead of reaching only one audience, they may qualify for our genre-specific newsletters that we publish on Tuesdays and Fridays.
That allows our system to continue introducing the same book to entirely different groups of readers.
6. Accurate Pricing Matters
One of the most common reasons promotions stop after their guaranteed placement isn't reader interest. It's missing or inaccurate pricing information.
Accurate sale dates and regular prices give our system the information it needs to continue recommending eligible bargain books.
Fortunately, this is also one of the easiest things authors can improve.
7. No Two Promotions Look Alike
Perhaps the biggest lesson of all is that there is no "typical" promotion.
Some books receive only a handful of appearances. Others receive dozens.
A few generate most of their clicks immediately. Others continue building momentum over several weeks.
Our personalized newsletter system isn't designed to make every promotion identical. It's designed to keep looking for new opportunities whenever another reader is a good match.
Where We Go From Here
Two hundred promotions is only the beginning.
As more data becomes available, we're excited to answer questions like:
-
Is a three-day KDP Select promotion better than a five-day promotion?
-
Which genres benefit the most from multiple placements?
-
How much additional discovery comes from publishing wide?
-
How many readers continue opening newsletters several days after they're sent?
We'll continue sharing what we learn here on the blog because we believe the more authors understand how our system works, the more successful their promotions can become.
One of the most exciting parts of launching our new personalized newsletter system has been discovering things we simply couldn't measure before.
As hundreds more promotions complete their reporting period, we'll continue sharing the trends, surprises, and practical advice we uncover.
We hope those insights help you get even more from every promotion you run with The Fussy Librarian.
