Susan DeFreitas, an award-winning author, editor, and book coach, has shared the fifth installment of a seven-part series on developing a writing practice.

She took inspiration from a book called Stick with It: A Scientifically Proven Process for Changing Your Life—For Good and is adapting it to benefit authors, specifically.

The latest step is utilizing neurohacks — or, in less technical terms, faking it until you make it.

In essence, DeFreitas says, rather than waiting to feel like a writer or inspired, you treat yourself as if you feel like a writer or are creative.

That could mean joining a writing group, subscribing to a trade magazine, introducing yourself as an author, or any other number of actions that signal to yourself that yes, you are going to write that book.

Read more about neurohacks and how they can work for you in your writing life (and elsewhere) in the guest post on Jane Friedman’s blog.
