What’s the secret to an adrenaline-spiking action scene? Well-rounded characters!

Okay, so we’re oversimplifying Joshua Essoe’s interview on the fine points of writing action scenes.

Essoe, the author of Essoe’s Guides to Writing: Action Sequences, told Mignon Fogarty that while clever choreography can make for an interesting fight scene, providing emotional context for the fight — through character development — will keep a reader interested for much longer.

For more on that and other tips, such as how much detail and dialogue to include (and how), check out his full interview on the Grammar Girl blog, where you can listen to their conversation or read a rough transcript.
