When we came across Joanna Penn’s interview with a former police sergeant who now advises writers on accuracy in crime fiction, we had a few expectations.

Among them was that Patrick O'Donnell, the brains behind Cops and Writers, would correct legal mistakes in popular storytelling and counterbalance the negative stereotypes some would have about police officers.

He certainly did that — but what we didn’t expect, and what he also did, was offer a nuanced view of the typical criminal, too.

Penn’s conversation with O'Donnell covers those topics and many more; the transcript of it at The Creative Penn also includes a link if you’d prefer to listen to the discussion.
