The gut reaction to the phrase “subscription service” is a complicated one, for many of us.
While the consumers in us may enjoy using Spotify, Netflix, etc., the creators in us may see them in a much less flattering light.
Orna Ross and Joanna Penn acknowledge this dichotomy in an episode of the Alliance of Independent Authors podcast, but they also encourage authors to look at the whole picture, versus channeling the anxiety that the music industry has publicly expressed, for instance.
No matter how you feel, though, subscription services probably aren’t going away anytime soon, so you may want to read (or listen to) how Ross and Penn see subscription services helping and also harming indie authors.
