No doubt any writers who are parents will have already spotted this flaw in fiction.

But for those unfamiliar with young children, developmental editor Jessi Rita Hoffman has an important wakeup call: they don’t speak anywhere close to how adults do.

This may even sound obvious to you, regardless of your familiarity with children, but based on Hoffman’s work, it’s not a bad idea to check your work in that area.

Hoffman recommends an expert resource for how to write authentic children’s dialogue (as well as suggesting “fieldwork” to gather real-life examples).
