In a perfect world, once an author released a book, they would forever be fully satisfied with the final product and results.

We don't live in a perfect world, of course.

So sometimes, for varying reasons, an author may want to change the book they've already released.
That could be an update — or a republication.

The two aren't interchangeable, at least in terms of how Amazon approaches them.
