Kris Rusch isn't going to tell you not to compare yourself to other writers.

And that's not because she doubts in your ability to follow through.

It's actually because if done properly, comparing yourself to other writers can benefit you.

Emphasis on "if done properly."

The idea isn't, as she's seen so many writers do, to assume you don't (or can't) measure up, or to grumble about the other writer not being deserving of success.

Those are both easy justifications for not trying.

Rather, it's because Rusch believes you can learn something from any other writer, whether it's a cautionary lesson or one worth of emulation — and no matter how successful or unsuccessful you perceive that author to be.
