Recent posts on the business side of writing balance each other out, with one focusing on concrete steps and the other discussing the proper mindset.

The former comes from Joanna Penn, who discusses author estate planning on The Creative Penn podcast with Michael La Ronn, author of a few handbooks on this topic.

And the latter comes from Kristine Kathryn Rusch, who urges artists to get over any squeamishness they might have and adopt a business mindset.

That isn't to say, create something simply because you think it will sell.

Rather, Rusch wants you to remember the value of your work, both in the short and long term; plan for how to handle both success and failure; and, above all, keep control of your own IP.

You can't know what the future will bring, but if your work belongs to you, you can adapt to it and make the best of it.
