We learned the expression "measure twice, cut once" in the context of carpentry, though of course it applies, literally, to a number of other situations.

Metaphorically, it also suits writing a novel.

Author/editor/book coach Susan DeFreitas says she too often sees writers seeking later-stage feedback on a novel that could've used better guidance in a much earlier stage.
