Apple has quietly added a potentially huge feature for authors: artificial intelligence narration.

The Verge credits the Guardian with breaking the news that two digital narrators are now available to voice romance novels and literary, historical, and women’s fiction books.

Two additional voices are in the works for nonfiction books, too.

Also of extreme interest: publishers and authors retain the audiobook rights and can release additional audio versions of the same book, if they so choose.

So what do these narrators sound like? The Verge describes them as "perfectly intelligible, but with an unmistakably artificial edge that lacks the warmth of a human storyteller."

That said, the Verge acknowledges that the quality is likely to improve.
