Jim Dempsey's post for Writer Unboxed discussing the hard facts of traditional publishing isn't intended to be a downer.

It's meant to set the scene for authors to set reasonable expectations — and to encourage them to focus on the other reasons they write.

For some writers, that may simply be overcoming the odds and actually finishing a novel.

For others, it may be the sense of satisfaction in giving voice to a character who appeared in their mind.

There's no shortage of reasons, but whatever yours is, Dempsey encourages you to identify it and use it to customize your individual benchmark for writing success.
