Publicity and marketing are both extremely useful for authors and their books.

But while they're both important, they are slightly different.

Penny Sansevieri says to think of marketing as a conversation you start and to think of publicity as a conversation that someone else has on your behalf (though you might join it).

And so once you have that difference straight, you're ready to consider how to gain book publicity and what kind would suit your book.

Sansevieri covers that in her post on book publicity for self-published authors.

LOVE the simplicity in explaining the difference. I am a first time best seller (Collecting True Friends) so your article was very helpful in how I need to approach my audience(s). thank you. Elizabeth
