The recent death of actor Louise Fletcher, most famous for playing Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, had David Corbett in a reflective mood.

It's an iconic role in an iconic movie, sure, but there are lessons to be learned from it, too.

Corbett points out that Fletcher didn't simply show up and read what was on the page, and that's why her performance was so memorable.

She put thought into what influenced and drove her character, drawing from her own life experiences to conjure up those emotions and behaviors, and considered her role in the bigger picture.

Corbett's full analysis of Nurse Ratched as a well-rounded villain is up at Writer Unboxed.
