I've heard St. Patrick's Day dubbed the day that everyone claims they're Irish.

But no matter what your cultural heritage, it can prove to be good material for your fiction.

Author Kimberly G. Giarratano has several such examples at hand of how her identity as a Jewish kid from New Jersey and her husband's identity as an Italian-American have both colored her fiction with vivid details.

An important note from her: Your experience is unique to you, and so if your particular rituals or traditions don't reflect that of every member of your cultural, ethnic, or religious group, that's absolutely fine.

Check out Giarratano's eight pieces of advice for including your heritage in your novel at Writer's Digest.
